The right bed sheet for your box spring bed
Congratulations! If a modern box spring bed has found its way into your bedroom, you are one of the absolute trendsetters when it comes to interior design. However, switching to a box spring bed often means getting new sheets as well. This is because box spring mattresses are usually higher than other mattresses. We will explain which buying criteria you should pay attention to, so that you can find your way through the multitude of offers and enjoy your new bed sheet for a long time.
Which bed sheets are suitable for your box spring bed?
Maybe you have already noticed it: Finding a suitable sheet for your box spring bed is not always easy! Not every sheet is suitable, because the structure of a box spring bed is very different from that of a conventional upholstered bed. The box is combined with a tall box spring mattress, which is usually topped with a topper.
In general, there are two different options for covering a box spring bed: Either a fitted sheet is used to cover only the topper, or a sheet with an extra-high seam is used to enclose the mattress and topper together. Is your mattress covered with fabric matching the bed frame? Then it is enough to buy a sheet for the topper.
Typical sizes for box spring bed mattresses and the corresponding fitted sheets are:
- 90x200 cm
- 100x200 cm
- 160x200 cm
- 180x200 cm
- 200x200 cm
To determine the right seam height, measure how high the mattress and topper are together.
If you own an electrically adjustable box spring bed, you will probably be interested in bed sheets that are specifically designed for covering split toppers. Therefore, in addition to the size specifications, pay attention to such
How to choose the right material for your bed sheet
Bed sheets come in a variety of materials, but you can recognize a high-quality cover by its high proportion of natural fibres, which absorb moisture well and thus ensure a comfortable sleeping environment. For healthy sleep, it is also worth looking for materials that are free of harmful substances and chemicals that are harmful to health. One of the best-known labels for textiles tested for harmful substances is the OEKO-TEX seal. If the bed sheet of your choice has this label, you can get comfortable in bed with peace of mind. The most popular materials for bed sheets include:
Jersey
Jersey, also called tricot, is a popular material for fitted sheets. The fabric is usually made of blended fibers, such as cotton, viscose, or silk. A jersey fitted sheet not only feels pleasant on the skin, but also has a climate-regulating effect, so that you can sleep comfortably in any season. The high elasticity is also a benefit. As a result, the fabric clings to the mattress without slipping or wrinkling.
Beaver
Ideal for the cold season: Beaver sheets are best suited to make you feel nice and cozy in bed. The cotton fabric can store heat very well, so that a warming effect is created.
Terrycloth
Similar to beaver, a terry fitted sheet has a fluffy and warming effect. The mixture of cotton and polyester feels soft and is also very easy to clean. Due to the high-pile surface, moisture can be absorbed well, which supports a balanced sleeping climate.
Microfiber
Microfiber bed sheets are also popular, as they are very permeable to air and are also suitable for allergy sufferers. Especially in summer, the microfiber fabric feels pleasantly cool to the touch - which is why it is also popular for bedding.
Tips for proper care
If you have finally purchased the right bed sheet for your box spring bed, you will of course want to try it out right away. But first of all, like all new textiles, the fitted bed sheet should go into your washing machine. This is the only way to ensure that any chemical odors are removed and to effectively prevent allergic reactions. Generally, you should wash fitted sheets at 60°C to safely kill bacteria. These temperatures are generally not a problem for cotton sheets, but if you have chosen a less easy-care and heat-resistant material, you should also invest in a good hygiene laundry rinse. Did you choose a sheet in bright colors instead of classic white? Then it's worth taking a look at the laundry label so that the colors look like new for a long time and the fabric doesn't fade as quickly or gets a gray haze.
The label of your bed sheet will also give you further care instructions on how to dry the sheet properly and whether you can iron it. It is important - just as with the mattress cover itself - to pull the sheet over the mattress only when it is completely dry. Residual moisture can otherwise cause a risk of mold.
